Who we are
Dr Lloyd Oates
Dr Lloyd Oates is registered Clinical Psychologist in Neuropsychology working with adults across the lifespan, focussing on a wide variety of physical and psychological difficulties encountered after brain injury. Lloyd provides comprehensive assessment, formulation, recommendations, and rehabilitation in relation to the physical and emotional consequences of brain injury.
Lloyd has extensive experience working in a range of NHS and private sector services, where he offers a comfortable and safe space for individuals who are navigating rehabilitation post-brain injury or the challenges faced with neurodegenerative conditions or experiencing mental health difficulties, and psychological distress. Lloyd is able to tailor and adapt rehabilitation and psychological interventions to match the individuals needs and strengths, ensuring that working with clients centres on good communication and delivered in the format that fits the client best.
Lloyd is experienced in supporting individuals with neurological injuries or illnesses, to adapt, and achieve their goals as part of rehabilitation. Working with cognitive, emotional, and behavioural difficulties, Lloyd uses an in-depth understanding of the brain and mind to support recovery. Lloyd is able to undertake mental capacity assessments to help support one off or ongoing support needs.
Therapeutically, Lloyd uses an integrative approach, drawing on a number of evidence based psychological approaches to underpin his clinical practice. Lloyd has specific interests, training, and experience in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Lloyd can use different therapies to best match the difficulties the client is experiencing. Lloyd aims to work towards a joint understanding of the development and maintenance of difficulties and collaboratively choosing the best approach to manage difficulties and aim to improve the client's quality of life.
Lloyd has spent time working in research, publishing a number of journals. Lloyd's research interests are; improving access to psychological care; adjustment to long-term health conditions; supporting carers and loved ones of people with neurological conditions; adapting therapeutic interventions for individuals with neurological conditions; and stroke research.
Lloyd also delivers and contributes to the teaching package on the local Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course at Newcastle University.
Lloyd is an experienced clinical psychology supervisor offering clinical supervision for mental health and neuropsychology.
